Self-Care 101: “I love me, like Kanye loves Kanye!”

You heard her! How many of you take the time to treat yourself and your body on a regular basis? I know it sounds like a trick question, or perhaps, a dumb question but it’s real. As we all make it through this thing called adulting, our bodies grow tired right along with our minds and our spirits. For those with children, busy lives or whatever holds you up, it’s easy to struggle to find the time to PURPOSELY practice self-care.

What is self-care? The term speaks for itself but the activities are all up to you. What soothes you? What brings you peace? What do you like? What makes you smile? What do you dream of doing if you find yourself with a free moment? All of these questions require you to focus on self for just one minute to formulate your responses.

It’s frightening to say out loud that we need to do something for ourselves on our own times, huh? We feel guilty, we take the time and worry through it all, or confuse ourselves about the objectives of purposeful self-care. The idea being, if you don’t replenish your mind, body and soul, you’ll have nothing to give to others or any aspect of your life.

So how do you replenish and unwind? Where, when and how do you step into your peace?

I used to be overly giving. Of my time, my energy, my physical presence, my emotions, everythinggg. Known to throw myself into what fuels me, I began to let it drain me. I found myself run ragged by giving more than I was allowing myself to take in. I wasn’t forced, I thought that running myself ragged WAS my peace. If I wasn’t busy, I wasn’t at peace (so I thought).  All of that changed when I essentially had a breakdown. As a Mental Health Warrior (more on that later), I knew I was fragile, but did not know how to care for myself. Until I had no choice. I actively worked to find my peace that allowed me to balance what I NEED to do on a daily basis, paired with things I WANT to do that are good for my mind, body and soul.

It’s NOT selfish to know that you need time to unwind and refresh before you continue to give more and more of yourself because if you do, at some point there will be nothing left to give!

[My most recent Self Care Sunday that included grilling out for the first time, a bubble bath with Lavender bath salts, 6 KBeauty steps, Mochi Ice Cream from Trader Joe’s, fresh linens on my bed and a fresh candle!]

Some of my favorite Self-Care must-haves?

Below are some things I do to practice Self-Care!

  • DIY Home Spa Days
  • Painting (Make your own mini art studio for less than $25!)
  • Adult Coloring Books
  • Enjoying dinner out on my own
  • Dressing my bed with freshly washed linens and snuggling up with a glass of wine and a movie
  • Journaling (I’m notorious for writing down my thoughts then ripping up the page so that I don’t dwell)
  • Take some deep breaths and just reflect for a moment! Sounds so minor but how often do you just sit, take a moment and think?

What do you do to bring your peace?

I agree with every sentiment of this post! Self-care is essential and if we don’t do it, we can’t expect someone else to do it. Thanks for all the great suggestions!

  3. For me, treating yourself is really spending quality time and focusing on just yourself (this is my excuse for having such an extensive skincare routine! haha). Thank you for your post! I have a similar post about self love and skincare, would love to get your feedback on it! Visit anytime! 🙂
